How Many Deck Boards Do I Need? Gaps and Lengths Tested
A fixed 16 × 12-foot deck tested across three designed gaps and two stock lengths.

Research question
How do repeated board gaps and available stock length affect a rectangular deck-board count?
Finding: Across the tested gaps, 16-foot stock changed from 29 to 27 boards. Keeping the default gap but switching to 12-foot stock increased the order to 37 boards.
Test method

Deck area was fixed at 192 square feet with 5.5-inch board faces and a 10% cutting allowance. Gap changed from one-eighth to three-eighths of an inch.

Coverage width was board face plus gap, converted to feet. Area divided by coverage width produced total linear footage, which was divided by stock length and rounded upward.

A separate case held the quarter-inch gap constant and changed stock from 16 to 12 feet to verify that coverage and purchasing dimensions remain independent inputs.

What the results mean
The gap repeats across every course, so excluding it systematically overstates board demand. A larger designed gap means fewer courses across the same width, though actual gap selection must follow material condition and manufacturer guidance.
Stock length changes the count but not the modeled linear footage. The lower piece count from longer stock may come with handling constraints, delivery limits, more difficult access, or different seam planning.
This area-based model assumes straight boards with no picture frame, breaker board, stair tread, fascia, or directional change. Those features should be measured as separate line items because their cut patterns are not represented by a general waste percentage.
Reproduce the result
The deck area is 16 × 12 = 192 square feet. Add board face and gap in inches, then divide by 12 to obtain the repeated coverage width in feet. For the quarter-inch row, 5.75/12 = 0.4791667 foot. Dividing 192 by that width gives approximately 400.696 linear feet before the 10% cutting allowance.
Multiply linear footage by 1.10, divide by the selected stock length, and round upward once. With 16-foot stock the exact demand is about 27.548 boards, producing 28. With 12-foot stock it is about 36.730, producing 37. A reproduction should not round the coverage width to 0.48 or the linear footage to 401 before the final step. Actual board direction and framing may require a course-based layout that supersedes this area model.
To isolate the gap effect, compare the three 16-foot-stock rows before looking at the shorter-stock case. To isolate stock length, compare only DK-0250 and DK-12FT. This paired-reading method prevents two changed variables from being credited for one result. The stable case IDs make those comparisons easy to repeat after future code or default updates.

- Compare stock lengths against the actual framing and planned seam locations.
- Take off borders, stairs, fascia, and breaker boards separately.
