From four walls to full cans

The calculator starts with the room perimeter and multiplies it by wall height. It subtracts 21 square feet for each standard door and 15 square feet for each standard window. Unusually large openings should be measured separately and reflected by adjusting the count or dimensions.

Coverage varies with surface texture, color change, application method, and paint quality. Bare drywall and masonry can absorb more paint, while a close color match on a smooth sealed wall may use less. The displayed purchase quantity is rounded up to whole gallons; keep leftover paint for future touch-ups.

Plan paint by surface, coat, and product

A paint estimate starts with the area that will actually receive paint, not simply the room's floor area. Walls, ceilings, doors, trim, and cabinets have different shapes and are often coated with different products. The calculator turns measured surface area into a volume by applying the selected coverage rate and number of coats. Its result is a planning quantity: texture, porosity, color change, application method, and painter technique can all move real consumption away from the label's nominal coverage.

Treat each paint system as a separate calculation. Primer should not be combined with finish paint, and a ceiling flat should not be pooled with wall eggshell merely because the color is similar. Product instructions and a small test area should settle assumptions when the substrate is unusual.

Measure the coated faces

For walls, measure the length of every wall at the floor and the painted height from the top of the baseboard to the ceiling line. Multiply each wall's length by its height, then add the wall areas. Measuring each wall separately handles rooms that are not rectangular and avoids losing alcoves, bump-outs, or chimney breasts. For a ceiling, measure its actual length and width; break an L-shaped ceiling into rectangles. Keep all dimensions in one unit. If measurements are in feet and inches, convert inches to decimal feet before multiplying, so 8 feet 6 inches becomes 8.5 feet rather than 8.6 feet.

Subtract openings only when the exclusion is meaningful. A large picture window, wide patio door, or tiled backsplash can be deducted by width times height. Measure doors separately if they receive a different enamel, counting each painted face. Record the coverage rate in square feet per gallon from the exact product, not a remembered industry average.

Worked example: bedroom walls

Consider a bedroom measuring 12 feet by 14 feet with an 8-foot painted wall height. The perimeter is 52 feet, so the gross wall area is 416 square feet. One 3-by-5-foot window and one 6-foot-8-inch by 3-foot door remove about 35 square feet together, leaving roughly 381 square feet. If the walls need two finish coats, the coating demand is 762 square feet. This multiplication matters: the wall area does not change, but every complete coat must cover it again.

Suppose the chosen paint lists 375 square feet per gallon under typical conditions. Dividing 762 by 375 gives 2.03 gallons. Buying only two gallons leaves essentially no allowance for roller loading, tray residue, touch-ups, or a porous repair. Three one-gallon cans would be a practical order if that is the available package size.

Turn gallons into a sensible order

Round up to purchasable container sizes after the full calculation, not after each wall. Compare the cost and leftovers from quarts, gallons, and five-gallon pails. Large containers can reduce color variation and unit cost, but they are awkward for a small room and may create more surplus than a mixed order.

Retain enough labeled paint for future repairs, especially for a custom tint or a sheen that may be hard to match. Store it according to the manufacturer's directions and note the room and purchase date. If the estimate lands close to a package boundary, consider wall texture, spray overspray, new drywall, and the likelihood of a third coat before choosing the lower quantity. Supplier advice is useful when a coating has a specialized spread rate or must meet a specified wet-film thickness.

Common paint-estimating mistakes

  • Using floor square footage for wall paint ignores both perimeter and wall height. Two rooms with equal floor area can have very different wall area, particularly when one is long and narrow.
  • Entering inches as tenths of a foot inflates dimensions. Six inches is 0.5 foot, not 0.6 foot; convert every mixed measurement before calculating area.
  • Forgetting to multiply by the number of coats produces a result that covers the surface only once. Primer, finish coats, and specialty topcoats must each be represented in their own system.
  • Assuming the highest label coverage on rough or bare material can create a shortage. Use the product's applicable range and lean conservative when the surface will absorb paint or has deep texture.
  • Subtracting every switch plate, narrow window, and sliver of trim gives false precision. Small exclusions are usually offset by loading losses, cutting in, and paint left in tools and containers.

Verify before tinting

Walk the room with the measurements and mark every face as wall paint, ceiling paint, trim enamel, primer, or excluded. Recheck the perimeter, painted height, large openings, coat count, and exact label coverage. Confirm that square feet are being compared with square feet per gallon and that the calculator's output has been rounded to containers only once.

Finally, inspect the substrate in strong light. Add allowance for fresh repairs, heavy texture, sprayer losses, or a major color shift, and reduce none of these assumptions without evidence from a test patch. Confirm sheen, tint formula, and container availability before purchase. The result should leave a modest, intentional touch-up reserve rather than an accidental shortage or an unexplained stack of surplus cans.

Does this include the ceiling?+

Yes when “Include ceiling” is selected. Wall and ceiling quantities are calculated and rounded separately because they commonly use different paint products.

Why are gallons rounded up?+

Paint is normally purchased in fixed can sizes, and partial coverage can interrupt a project. A small reserve is also useful for later repairs.
